Partly Facetious: taking the courts out of the equation'

"You know at the end of the day we must appreciate what Poodle did."
Published September 3, 2007

"You know at the end of the day we must appreciate what Poodle did."
"Why? He took the country to war when the country didn't want to go to war - that's dictatorship in my book..."
"But democracy ousted him in the end and this is even after he had a heavy Mandak."
"Ah! Yet another man with the Mandak!"
"Reminds me of Nawaz Sharif and his Mandak too..."
"Those days seem to be returning."
"What do you think will happen?"
"A deal."
"What's the deal between BB and Musharraf all about?"
"To take the courts out of the equation at this point for both of them..."
"Whatever do you mean?"
"BB wants a presidential pardon for all her past sins, still to be proved in courts of law and..."
"And Musharraf wants the condition of not being allowed to hold office of the president for two terms after having served the country in the military omitted from the constitution."
"Why didn't he do this before? And why would he want this in any case? He would merely be a ceremonial president."
"He just never thought he will be in this position before and at this point he wants to save whatever he can of the job."
"Ah yes, there is that."
"So they both start from a fresh plate?"
"Yes."
"I don't think there is anything wrong with that, if this is to guarantee that they won't indulge in the mistakes of the past..."
"They don't regard those as mistakes. They label it victimisation..."
"Right but this is not necessarily a bad thing."
"No, but we have to see how many votes BB will bring to the table. I am afraid Nawaz Sharif has emerged as a much more principled politician."
"But he will benefit from BB's insistence on a general amnesty for all politicians."
"Right, but without appearing to have compromised on principles..."
"And the deal between PML-N and Musharraf?"
"For some reason Musharraf is scared of his return. Why I don't quite know."
"Neither do I."
